With the benefit of turbocharging, it produces 88kW and 172Nm, which drive the front wheels.

There are two gearbox options, either a six-speed manual or the notably more sophisticated seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With its relatively low kerb mass of only 1085kg, the Venue has a credible blend of performance and economy.

Hyundai claims that its compact crossover will run the benchmark 0-100kph sprint in 11.3 seconds before registering a top speed of 183kph. Cruising fuel economy averages to 6.5l/100km.

Although the only available configuration is front-wheel drive, the Venue does have 195mm of ground clearance. This should make it capable of negotiating most of South Africa’s gravel roads.

Clever design architecture

Despite its compact size the Venue is relatively roomy inside and features clever design architecture, which allows for 350-litres of luggage space.

The model range launches with five derivatives, starting at R274 900 for the six-speed manual Motion trim Venue.

Hyundai’s most modestly equipped Venue rolls 15-inch steel wheels, which might not appeal to fashion conscious buyers but have great utility in the South African driving environment, with its many potholes and gravel roads.

Hyundai is cognisant of infotainment and smartphone convergence being a crucial aspect of any contemporary vehicle design. As such, the Venue comes standard with an Apple CarPlay-enabled infotainment system, for three of the five variants.

Pricing peaks at R369 900 for the Venue in Glide trim, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and features such as daytime running lights, climate control and push-button start.

Help support journalists, the guardians of independent journalism, through our student media initiative that gives a voice to students and their generation!
